Materials Commonly Used in Vacuum Forming

  • ABS – Broad spectrum of resins used across a number of applications. Can be formulated to meet UL flammability standards.
  • PC/ABS – Alloy delivers UL approval in addition to high impact performance.
  • HDPE – Cost effective material for industrial applications requiring high impact strength.
  • TPO – High impact material delivering performance in cold and high heat applications.
  • HIPS – Low cost resin used in many POP applications requiring excellent forming characteristics.
  • PVC/Acrylic – Widely used resin in micro-processor based equipment housings. Meets most stringent UL standards for flammability and can be made in wide range of colors and textures.


3-Axis CNC routers are used primarily to manufacture 2-dimensional parts from flat sheets. Thanks to our advanced routers’ multiple cutting and drilling heads, we can offer customers maximum cost efficiency by running multiple parts simultaneously.


5-Axis routers, with multiple-axis robotic heads, can trim and route parts that are tall or have multiple surfaces and angles, such as vacuum- or pressure-formed parts. In addition, we can use split-beds to allow for improved efficiency in routing, loading and unloading of parts during the routing process.


Milling or machining employs many of the same features as our routers, but is geared for smaller, more complex parts. When parts are more complex and require multiple tools to produce, Midland uses CNC machining centers. In the machining process, tools are stored within the machining center and tool changes, as well as movements of the drills and cutters, are programmed into the machine. The material is held stationary while the machining center makes the programmed cuts.

Vacuum forming, also known as thermoforming, vacuum pressure forming or vacuum molding, is a procedure in which a sheet of heated plastic material is shaped a certain way. The mold used to shape the plastic material is also known as a “buck.” Vacuum forming is a type of pressure forming process, and is one of the oldest plastic forming methods.

Thermoforming Molds
Typically, thermoforming molds have protruded, or convex surfaces, and are referred to as male, or positive,molds; or they have concave, cavity surfaces, and are referred to as female, or negative, molds.

Molds canbe further defined as being single cavity or 'one-up' molds for single or short run production, and multiple cavity, and or 'family' molds for volume production. Family molds are multiple cavity molds used to produce more than one part design simultaneously from a single sheet of plastic stock.
Thermoforming molds for short run production or prototype work use molds made of wood, plastic, epoxy, or other relatively inexpensive material. These molds are not temperature controlled.
High production thermoforming molds are always made of aluminum because of its lightweight, machine ability, and high thermal conductivity. Aluminum molds contain channels through which water, the primary cooling medium, is pumped. Cooling rate and temperature control affect the shrinkage and other attributes of the thermoformed part.
To achieve part detail, molds must also be able to evacuate all air trapped between the plastic and mold surfaces. This is done through the use of a vacuum or providing vent holes at specific locations within the thermoforming mold.
